Glaukos Says Epioxa Shows Lasting Benefits for Eye Disease

9 News HD: Glaukos has reported promising long-term results for Epioxa, a treatment for keratoconus, an eye condition that can slowly change the shape of the cornea and make vision blurry or distorted. The company says patients continued to show improvements in corneal shape and vision three years after receiving a single treatment.
The results came from a follow-up study that tracked patients for three years after treatment. According to Glaukos, patients did not need another treatment during this period.
The study found that treated eyes maintained an improvement in corneal shape over the three years. Around 29% of treated eyes gained at least two lines on a standard eye chart, while 20% gained three or more lines compared with their vision before treatment.
Keratoconus affects the clear front surface of the eye, known as the cornea. The condition can cause the cornea to become thinner and bulge outward, leading to blurred vision and difficulty seeing clearly. In serious cases, it may cause major vision problems.
Epioxa is designed to help strengthen the cornea without removing its outer layer before treatment. This approach may offer patients a less invasive option for managing the condition.
Glaukos also reported that no serious side effects or treatment-related problems were recorded during the three-year follow-up. However, the study included 35 patients, and further research will help build a clearer picture of the treatment’s long-term results.
The findings are encouraging, but they do not mean every patient will experience the same benefits. People with possible symptoms of keratoconus should consult an eye specialist for proper testing and advice.
