IPhone 17 Pro Survives 100,000-Foot Drop to Set World Record

Protected by the newly designed AirX phone case from mobile accessories brand RhinoShield, the experiment reached a maximum altitude of just more than 100,000ft, more than three times higher than a commercial passenger jet reaches as it cruises.

The drop, one of the most extreme ever performed on an Apple smartphone, proved surprisingly successful and has earned the team the Guinness World Record for ‘Highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case onto natural landforms’.

Key details of the drop test: Drop altitude: 100,418 ft (30,607 m) Duration of drop: 25 mins Conditions: -60 degrees Celsius (-76 degrees F) and immense changes in atmospheric pressure.

No parachute, no heating system, and no landing cushion were used. Landing: The device landed in rugged terrain over 100,000 ft from its launching point over the Arctic Circle.

How it survived.

Astonishingly, after falling for 25 minutes with no parachute – or any protective aid, apart from a newly developed phone case – the iPhone 17 Pro survived the extreme high-altitude test and was completely undamaged.

A search and rescue team retrieved the phone about 5 hours after landing in a frozen lake. “When the team found it, it was in perfectly pristine condition – not a single scratch on the screen or chassis, and it still powered on and was able to make calls,” said a spokesperson for RhinoShield.

Two key physics and engineering elements were behind the feat: Terminal Velocity: When an object is dropped, air resistance limits the speed at which it reaches terminal velocity, or the maximum speed it will ever fall.

The tumbling phone with a phone case only reached between 30-100mph, meaning the impact on landing was like a jump from a much lower elevation.
