9 News HD: China is shifting its focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) to make humanoid robots smarter and more useful in everyday life.

After developing robots that can run, dance and perform complex movements, Chinese companies are now working on technology that can help machines understand their surroundings, learn new tasks and make decisions.

This technology is known as embodied AI. It allows robots to learn from real-world activities and adjust to different situations instead of following only fixed instructions. The aim is to develop machines that can perform a wider range of tasks in factories, shops and other workplaces.

Investment in China's embodied AI sector is also growing quickly. According to research firm ITjuzi, companies in this field raised 93.5 billion yuan, around $13 billion, through 322 deals in the first half of 2026. This was five times higher than the amount recorded during the same period last year.

Chinese companies are using different methods to train robots, including human demonstrations, wearable sensors and computer simulations. Firms such as X Square, Galaxea and Spirit AI are among those developing advanced robot intelligence.

The move is also increasing competition between China and the United States. While US companies have an advantage in some areas of AI research and computing power, China hopes its strong manufacturing industry and access to real-world training data will help it compete.

However, making robots reliable in unfamiliar situations remains a major challenge. Experts say it may take years before these machines can handle a wide range of jobs without human support.
