GLOF Threat: KP PDMA Alerts Upper Districts Amid Heat and Rain

According to the advisory, hot weather conditions combined with rainfall expected from the night of August 31 through September 4 could accelerate the melting of glaciers.
The resulting increase in the volume and water levels of glacial lakes may heighten the risk of sudden flooding and powerful water flows downstream.
The alert covers Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Mansehra, with the concerned district administrations directed to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
PDMA has called for continuous monitoring of vulnerable GLOF locations and timely dissemination of warnings to communities living in low-lying and potentially affected areas.
Authorities have also been instructed to conduct evacuation drills at sensitive locations and ensure that designated safe areas are prepared to accommodate residents in case of an emergency.
The authority has urged the public, particularly residents and tourists in vulnerable mountainous areas, to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, camping and trekking near areas exposed to possible glacial flooding.
People have also been advised to stay away from rivers, streams, glacial lakes and narrow valleys during periods of heightened risk.
