PTI MNA who defeated Bilawal in Lyari considers resigning


(Karachi News): One of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) 14 MNAs that had been chosen from Karachi at the past general elections, the success of Abdul Shakoor Shad was arguably among the best upsets as he was able to conquer none aside from the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) youthful supremo, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in the constituency of Lyari, that was the PPP’s stronghold because the party’s beginning.

He made his way into the National Assembly after procuring 52,750 votes in NA-246, beating the PPP chairperson who rated third following bagging 39,325 votes. He had been encouraged by several employees, civil society activists and community businesses of Lyari because he canvassed for votes under the motto’Lyari Lyari walon ka [Lyari belongs to the people of Lyari]’.

Nasir Kareem Baloch, PTI’s candidate for Lyari’s provincial assembly constituency PS-108 from the 2018 elections, has left the party and joined the PPP later he underwent the apathy in the PTI leadership towards the problems of Lyari.

Shad stated there was a frequent understanding among Lyari’s inhabitants that following the PPP chairperson’s defeat in a place which has been regarded as a PPP’s bastion at Karachi, the provincial authorities was’victimising’ the region by not solving its water, sewerage and other governmental problems. He added that some leaders of this PTI had contacted and assured him that his bookings could be addressed. He explained he was dwelling in Lyari for decades and understood the seriousness of problems.

Residents and activists in the Region concur with Shad Concerning the PTI’s apathy towards Lyari. Zahid Barakzai, a pioneer of the Lyari Awami Mahaz (LAM), a bunch of neighbourhood social activists, said individuals of Lyari had hunted for Shad and the PTI since they had been frustrated with the PPP because of its participation in gang violence.

A LAM staff had a meeting with Shad a week to go over the problems of Lyari. Barakzai remembered that Shad had attracted Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Khan Afridi into Lyari who pledged to set a centre of NADRA at the region, but the government had failed to begin any job. PTI employees of District South are angry with the celebration for dismissing Shad.

“The PTI has missed a great opportunity to keep intact its support in the city, especially Lyari,” commented Shahzeb Mehmood, a PTI supporter in the Baghdadi region. He added that when the situation didn’t change, the celebration wouldn’t have the ability to win a seat from Lyari from the local government surveys.
