Speaking to journalists upon his return from China, Trump claimed the United States had almost destroyed Iran’s military capability. He said Iran might attempt to rebuild its position after a month-long ceasefire, adding that Washington could be compelled to launch further action for “clear-up work”.
The US president said he personally did not support a ceasefire with Iran, but Washington took the step following appeals from other countries, especially Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Iran dismissed the American statements as “psychological tactics” and said the country’s defence capability remained intact. Tehran warned that any renewed attack on Iran would receive a decisive response.
According to American media reports, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Qatar played an important behind-the-scenes diplomatic role in recent weeks to facilitate ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran.
