Lahore: In response to concerns over rising smog levels, the Lahore High Court has issued fines of Rs 3,000 for home car washing and Rs 5,000 for improper parking within the city.

During a recent hearing addressing petitions related to smog mitigation, Justice Shahid Karim presided over the case.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) lawyer over the initiation of development projects in the city, the court noted that smog season had already begun, and preparations should have started six months in advance.

The court questioned the rationale behind the caretaker government's decision to commence development projects prematurely, citing a lack of clarity regarding project funding, which involves significant sums of money.

Furthermore, the court decreed a fine of Rs 5,000 for individuals parking their vehicles improperly within the city and a Rs 3,000 fine for those washing cars at home.

These fines are intended to contribute to the funds of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).

The court also highlighted the increasingly serious water crisis in the country and instructed the LDA to inform the Registrar of Housing Societies about the court's orders.

Additionally, the Judicial Water Commission has recommended increasing fines for not wearing helmets by an additional Rs 2,000.
