Indus Waters Treaty India, Pakistan to hold talks after two years

Islamabad: A delegation of Pakistan’s water officials will leave for New Delhi on Monday (today) for a two-day meeting to discuss the Indus water sharing issue after a gap of two years.

As per details, this will be the annual meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission.

Following the provisions of the Indus Water Treaty, both the commissioners are required to meet at least once a year alternately in India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s Commissioner for Indus Waters Syed Muhammad Meher Ali Shah will lead the delegation. Likewise, the Indian delegation will be led by India’s Indus Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Saxena.

Under this meeting, Pakistan will present its objections over India’s combative water projects on the Chenab River as the country has objections with regard to four contentious hydroelectric projects including Pakal Dul and Ratle power project.

The Permanent Indus Commission (PIC), specifies that the waters of three eastern rivers including Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej, had been reserved for India.

While western rivers Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum, are for Pakistan. The previous session of talks was held in Lahore, two years ago.
