3rd Committee of UNGA adopts Pakistan-sponsored resolution on countering disinformation

ISLAMABAD: The 3rd Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution that called for countering disinformation for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
According to a Foreign Office spokesman, Pakistan had tabled a resolution in the General Assembly on Tuesday to counter the misinformation.
Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram introduced the resolution.

Introducing the draft resolution, Munir Akram reiterated Pakistan's commitment to countering the virus of disinformation by all possible means.
He said Pakistan will continue to promote this by both national means and through international cooperation with member states and other stakeholders under the umbrella of the UN.
The resolution emphasized that business enterprises including online platforms and social media companies ensure that their commercial objectives do not undermine human rights.
