The Khanewal police gunned down a man and detained three of his friends Thursday night for not stopping the car, say eyewitnesses.
The deceased family protested the killing of Tanzeel Akhter on the National Highway.
The eyewitnesses say they saw the policemen getting out of a private car and signalling Akhter to stop his car. After he did not slow his vehicle, the police fired multiple shots at the car, killing Akhter.
He had reportedly gone to buy food from a restaurant. The residents found his body the next morning on the highway. The police moved the body to a hospital for a post-mortem examination after which the protesters blocked the highway for traffic.
The resident say Akhter had no criminal record and used to earn his livelihood by driving a tractor. He has left behind four children.
