Many cricket experts and former cricketers had voiced their opinion on whether India should boycott the tie and concede the two points in the mega event in a bid to protest against the terror attack; as the responsibility of the incident was taken by Pakistan-based militant group. However, the attention has been shifted to ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition, and a final call will be taken ahead of the tournament (if necessary).
Amidst all this, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag backed Virat Kohli-led Team India to beat Pakistan in the marquee event and rated the Indo-Pak tie as nothing less than a ‘war’. Speaking at an event in Goa, the right-hander stated, “There are two points which are discussed, whether we should have a war with Pakistan or not (and whether we should play Pakistan).
There is another point that is discussed. We should do whatever is good for the country’s welfare. When India and Pakistan play a match, it is nothing less than a war. We should win the war, not lose it,” added the 40-year-old cricketer.
Many former cricketers, including the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Mohammad Azharuddin, Harbhajan Singh, had condemned the attack and called for India’s boycott of Pakistan encounter.
Both sides are scheduled to lock horns with each other on June 16 at Old Trafford, Manchester. Kohli and Co. will fancy their chances against the Men in Green as Indian cricket team are yet to lose an encounter versus their arch-rivals in World Cup history.
However, in their last ICC meet, Pakistan had thrashed India by a whopping 180-run margin to win the 2017 Champions Trophy in England and Wales.
If Pakistan defy the odds to beat India? Or, India will continue to march ahead against the neighbours and stretch their dominance in the tournament-history?
