KARACHI: A bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday signalled life span in prison for all those involved in the production of Gutka and other poisonous substances. A physician of the cancer ward of this hospital advised the chair that about 10,000 sufferers of mouth cancer see Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital every year.
The bench was hearing a contempt petition against I.G. Sindh Police and many others on non-compliance of their court judgment about prohibiting Gutka and other harmful substances.”Such a large number of mouth cancer patients in a single hospital of the city is very surprising,” the seat remarked over the revelation.
The seat questioned. “It is also terrorism, which is claiming lives of humans,” the seat remarked. Police aware in their areas of work and understood those individuals making gutka, ” the court stated. The issue couldn’t be addressed without actions against the officers that were concerned, the chair stated.
Secretary Law advised the court that the invoice for laws on the matter was handed over. The seat contested the sentence of 3 years prison term advocated for the buyer, the gutka manufacturer and both. “Those involved in manufacturing of gutka should be awarded life term in jail,” the seat remarked.”Do you want the court to summon the minister or the chief minister,” the court requested the secretary.
Justice Salahuddin Panhwar in a previous proceeding stated,”People are dying by chewing Gutka but no one sensing (seriousness of) the matter.”Factories of Gutka, Mava and Mainpuri should be sealed forthwith,” court ” A legislation bill should be tabled in the assembly immediately.”Advocate Muzammil Mumtaz and many others had filed a request in court and also sought action against sale and manufacturing of the substances alleging that the authorities were doing nothing contrary to them. Gutka is planning of tobacco made from crushed tobacco, catechu wax, areca nut lime and sweet or sour flavourings.
