A fire broke out at two cardboard factories and one plastic factory in Karachi’s Landhi area Sunday night, officials said.

Fire tenders were immediately called in to extinguish the blaze at the factories located in the Karachi Export Processing Zone. The fire at the plastic factory has been put out. For the other two factories, the blaze is yet to be doused after 14 hours.

An emergency was imposed at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board hydrants in Landhi and Safoora Goth after the blaze erupted. Fifteen water tankers were sent to the site immediately, according to KWSB MD Khalid Shaikh.

According to rescue officials, the fire erupted due to a short circuit in one of the buildings. “Due to the blaze, the buildings have gotten weak and might fall,” a rescue officer said.

He added that it will take six to eight more hours to completely put out the fire. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and has summoned a detailed report of it.

Pakistan Rangers personnel reached the site and helped workers come out of the building. Firefighters were still busy putting out the blaze. No loss of life has yet been reported.
